Marc noticed in more and more conversations with Poundwise clients that many of them are yearning for a second home in Spain or Spanish real estate as an investment. This inspired us to explore how the process of buying a home in Spain works. Since we had previously worked with Sherlyn Homes, we knew they were the perfect partner to assist us in this.
Property tour in Spain
Once in Spain, we were warmly welcomed by one of Sherlyn Homes’ contacts and had the chance to view several properties in Marbella and Estepona. What beautiful homes! But we quickly realized that buying a house in Spain can be tricky when you don’t speak the language. Thankfully, everything was patiently explained to us, and we were guided step by step through the process.
After the viewings, we decided to discuss things further over lunch in Estepona. While enjoying the delicious food, we realized how important it is to act quickly when you’re interested in a property. At the same time, it’s crucial not to rush the process, as there’s much more to buying a house in Spain than just finding the perfect home.
The legal and tax side
The next step was a consultation with a financial advisor/attorney and a tax advisor. This was particularly interesting for us, especially for Marc, who’s always on the other side of the table as a financial advisor. The meeting took place at the Work Café in Marbella, where we received in-depth information about the fiscal and legal aspects of buying a house in Spain. Especially for entrepreneurs, there are interesting tax structures that can offer significant benefits. Therefore, it’s essential to get the right advice and guidance. What we also learned is that each region has different rules and conditions. Additionally, the role of the notary is very different from what we’re used to in the Netherlands.
This experience was not only educational but also very enjoyable. We now have a much better understanding of the home-buying process in Spain, which helps us advise our clients more effectively when referring them to Sherlyn Homes.
